259 Days To Go

November 11, 2011 at 3:25 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

With 259 days to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games, Rob Andrews, London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition Manager, addressed the ISAF Council to give them a flavour of what is to come in Weymouth and Portland next year.

Andrews spoke about the scale of the games which will bring 10,500 athletes and 20,000 media and broadcasters together. Add in 70,000 volunteers and 10 million tickets and it puts into perspective the scale of work the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games have on their hands.

The Olympic Test Event, the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, saw 436 athletes in 309 boats compete. The regatta tested the Field of Play, Equipment, Omega tracking and the results system. Andrews stated that the core systems are robust and the sailors are confident.

For the first time in its long Olympic history, sailing will be ticketed. And of the 60,000 tickets that went on sale, they have all sold out with the ticketed viewing area on the Nothe Fort and Gardens. Moving forward Andrews and his team will be working closely with ISAF on the sports presentation, spectator experience, branding – to suit TV and spectators, on board camera development and tracking producing instant results.

In 2008 Andrews was welcomed by the Chinese Olympic Sailing organisers. Andrews will be doing the same for the Rio 2016 Olympic organisers next year to further the sports development and continue the growth of Olympic sailing.
